The Elegant Dancing Years - Chapter 63 - Volume 2

Chapter 63 -
Fallen Through and Standing Exposed

The others did not see the similar expression, of simultaneously revealing a secretive smile that would make human hearts tremble, of the two at the throne, and only saw His Majesty sigh and glance at the Third Prince who could not stop crying, after which the expression on his face seemed to soften, “Don’t cry.” After those words, he gestured to Liu Yi to hand the other a handkerchief.

Seeing His Majesty act like this, the Officials thought to themselves that the Third Prince seemed to be in the clear, and that even if he received a punishment, it would be house arrest or something similar. Then they looked again at the Second Prince, Qi Mingyue, on the side, although his expression was as usual, he slowly rose and stood off to the side, not saying another word, the look in his downcast eyes difficult to discern.

When he suddenly stood up, Qi Xutian raised his eyebrows and looked at him. Qi Mingyue met his questioning eyes and as he moved his body slightly, an odd look appeared on his face. Although he had been f•cked excessively last night, he woke up today and smelt that special fragrance, so it had to be that his Imperial father had anointed him with Bai Fu 1 again. So when he just appeared, he felt no pain between his legs, but once he sat for a while, there was a burst of discomfort from below. Obviously, a few more layers of cushions should be added to the seemingly luxurious Imperial Throne. Until then, he decided it was better to stand.

Meanwhile, not far from the throne, Qi Lianshuo took the handkerchief handed to him by Liu Yi, clenching it tightly yet cried even more. As he raised his head in a daze of tears, he saw that Qi Mingyue had stood up and that his Imperial father had not pulled him to sit down again, so a glimmer of light appeared in his tearful eyes.

“Father Emperor don’t ignore this son, this son knows his mistake, this son really knows he was wrong…… I don’t want to be the Crown Prince anymore, you can give it to Second Imperial Elder Brother, okay. If Xiao San’er can stay with Father Emperor, that would be enough…… Since Mother Consort has passed away, Xiao San’er only has Father Emperor. Father Emperor you cannot abandon me……” As he cried, he continued to take a few steps forward and was soon standing just a few steps away from the throne.

When Qi Xutian saw him coming forward, he did not stop him, moreover Head Steward Liu still without a word or movement, stood on the side. When the Officials at the bottom saw this, they all sighed in admiration. The Third Prince was worthy of being the Prince most favored by His Majesty, apart from the Second Prince. With this cry and uproar and bringing up Concubine Xiao, who was buried in the fire, he softened His Majesty’s heart for a moment and perhaps put an end to this matter.

Seeing that Qi Xutian did not show any displeasure, Qi Lianshuo bit his lip and threw himself into his arms, whimpering and continuing to sob. Still incessantly begging for mercy and saying he was wrong would make anyone who saw it soften his heart. Although the Officials below felt that the Third Prince was being too cowardly, but since he was only fourteen and a half years old, and was frankly speaking just a child, they no longer felt he was exaggerating, and if His Majesty let him off lightly, they would not object.

Qi Mingyue stood aside, the discomfort below making him frown slightly, but the displeasure that rose in his heart suddenly made his eyes grow cold. Although he knew that his Imperial father was only putting on a play and although he knew that it would not end well with Qi Lianshuo, he simply did not want to see anyone in the arms of the man who belonged to him.

Even if Qi Lianshuo’s love for his Imperial father was only that of father and son, the scene in front of him was enough to bring a cold killing intent to his heart. He finally understood why his Imperial father would become furious if he saw him getting close to anyone else.

Qi Mingyue raised his eyes, which were filled with icy coldness. The corners of his thin lips lifted slightly, with a hint of harshness, as he glanced lightly at the boy crying in Qi Xutian’s arms. “That is no place for you to be, so get off.”

His tone was neither too fast nor too slow. Spoken in a monotone voice, the words he spoke were gentle, but the Officials could hear a cold and murderous aura in Second Prince Qi Mingyue’s words. This was just like the usual omen of His Majesty getting angry, just as lightly spoken and yet just as chilling. With these words, he no longer seemed as calm as water, and his immortal-like demeanor suddenly revealed an intimidating majestic presence that made people completely forget his age, only to feel that they were facing the same displeased Emperor of Cang He, overwhelmed by his imposing aura.

When Qi Lianshuo, who was lying in Qi Xutian’s arms, heard Qi Mingyue’s words, his body stiffened and even forgot to cry. Qi Xutian glanced sideways at the expression of his Ming’er and smiled knowingly. He pulled Qi Lianshuo out of his arms and said, “Your Second Imperial Elder Brother is not happy, so why don’t you get off quickly, Xiao San’er.”

Qi Lianshuo wiped the tears from his face, and was especially pleased to hear that his Imperial father’s words contained a meaning of protection. If he could make his Imperial father dissatisfied with Qi Mingyue, there might still be room for change in the position of Crown Prince.

Qi Lianshuo got up from Qi Xutian’s arms and walked over to Qi Mingyue. Blinking the tears out of his eyes, he grabbed his sleeve and half leaned into his arms. Looking up at Qi Mingyue who was slightly taller than him, he said, “Second Imperial Elder Brother, your Imperial Younger Brother knows he was wrong…… don’t drive me away please…… Xiao San’er will not fight for the position of Crown Prince with Imperial Elder Brother…… Imperial Elder Brother, can’t you share Imperial father with me…… If Second Imperial Elder Brother can sit with Imperial father, why can’t Xiao San’er……” Choking on tears, Qi Lianshuo spoke tearfully, but the meaning of his words gave the impression that Qi Mingyue had no reason to say such things, and made it seem like Qi Mingyue was vying for favor.

Looking at Qi Lianshuo leaning against his chest, a faint light smile appeared on Qi Mingyue’s lips, as he had to admire the other. His eyes were clearly filled with disgust and hostility, yet Qi Lianshuo could still jump into his arms and cry incessantly, while the other’s words made it seem that he was the one who was at fault.

The coldness in his eyes became more and more obvious, Qi Mingyue’s original desire to tease had already disappeared completely when he had seen the other crying in his Imperial father’s arms, yet his Imperial father was still so interested in putting on a play with him here. Was it to see how jealous he could get? Fine, he would clearly show him how jealous he could get.

The shallow smile on his lips turned into a cold, icy chill as he flung his hand, and just as Qi Xutian showed his displeasure and tried to yank Qi Lianshuo away from him, Qi Lianshuo had already been thrown hard against the steps.

Looking at Qi Lianshuo lying on the ground, Qi Mingyue’s corners of his mouth went up with a trace of coldness. Since he was to be Crown Prince, he would not allow others to be arrogant and unrestrained in front of him. Since his Imperial father belonged to him, he could not allow anyone else to covet him at all. Whatever Qi Lianshuo’s intentions were, he could not tolerate anyone else in his Imperial father’s arms.

Seeing him like this, everyone gasped. The Second Prince, who had always had a noble and elegant demeanor, had actually acted like that in front of His Majesty!? They were all a little incredulous and almost rubbed their eyes to look again. They all stared in disbelief, only to see that the Second Prince was indeed enveloped in an icy aura, and that his body was emitting a fiery killing intent, clearly in the throes of anger, and no different from His Majesty when he was furious. The similar face also wore a shallow smile, which, like His Majesty's smile, was terrifying and awe-inspiring.

Qi Lianshuo was unaware of the expression of the person next to him, nor of the astonished and reverent reactions of the Officials below. Covering his forehead, with faint traces of blood seeping out from between his fingers, he fell at the feet of Qi Xutian with a look of fear and shock. Looking up at Qi Xutian, he saw that his Imperial father was displeased and his eyes were dark. Qi Lianshuo struggled to his feet and snuggled up to him, dropping his hand, revealing a crimson red color of blood. “Father Emperor…… Second Imperial Elder Brother he……” After saying that, he sobbed lightly, with a look of resignation and choking with sobs it seemed he could not utter another word.

When Qi Xutian had seen the other leaning into his Ming’er’s arms just now, he was already upset, and when he saw that his Ming’er was really angry, he also withdrew his interest in teasing him further. When he thought of Qi Lianshuo throwing himself into his Ming’er’s arms and just touching his body, Qi Xutian became slightly angry. How could his Ming’er be touched at will by others, and moreover how could his Ming’er endure the discomfort in his body.

Frowning slightly, he lifted Qi Lianshuo’s tiny face. His gentle movements seemed to carry a sense of pity, and just as Qi Lianshuo’s face brightened and he wanted to cry further, a stab of pain shot through his jaw.

Seeing the painful look on the other’s face, Qi Xutian’s strength in his hand did not slacken for a moment. As he firmly squeezed the other’s jawbone, he let out a few icy chuckles.

Qi Lianshuo’s tear-stained cheek gradually distorted in his hands, unable to speak, but fear and doubt surged through his heart like a tidal wave. After being thrown away by Qi Mingyue, he had clearly seen displeasure and anger in his Imperial father’s eyes, so why was he doing this to him instead of punishing Qi Mingyue? Should his Imperial father not have taken away Qi Mingyue’s title as Crown Prince in a fit of rage?

In the midst of fear and unease, he heard a whisper in his ears, “Does Xiao San’er not think it is odd how We are currently treating you like this?”

The Officials who had not yet realized what was happening above them also looked puzzled when they heard these words. His Majesty was fine before, so why would he now treat the Third Prince like this all of a sudden? So they all listened intently and opened their eyes wide to take another look.

To their surprise, they saw the Third Prince lying beneath the throne, his upturned face pinched by His Majesty's fingers as he showed an expression of pain on his face. His Majesty, with his usual chilling smile, said slowly, “Do you think We do not know? Your Mother Consort was once a Princess of An Yang, and the gold and silver you bribed the Officials with also came from An Yang. Do you still believe you can seize the position of Crown Prince with this?”

As soon as these words were spoken, not only Qi Lianshuo, but everyone was so shocked they froze in place, even Qi Mingyue showed a slight surprise.

Concubine Xiao was actually a Princess of An Yang? Then the Third Prince…… The look from the group of Officials towards Qi Lianshuo gradually changed, there was no longer a trace of sympathy and pity, but rather a wary and questioning look.

Concubine Xiao from An Yang had infiltrated Cang He, and hid in the Imperial Palace, so no one would believe she had no plan. Even though her son, Qi Lianshuo, had His Majesty’s blood coursing through his veins, he also had An Yang’s blood running through his veins at the same time. An Yang was close to Cang He, and everyone could see the hidden desire to obtain Cang He in recent years. If An Yang used Qi Lianshuo’s identity to help him ascend to the position of Crown Prince, then in that case, once Qi Lianshuo took control of the Imperial power, would Cang He not be in An Yang’s pocket!

Fortunately, His Majesty was able to see through An Yang’s plan, and the Second Prince returned to the palace in time to ensure the safety of Cang He. Several old Officials breathed a sigh of relief, and when they looked at the two Officials Zhao and Li who were still kneeling on the ground, they shook their heads. Choosing to help the most unfavorable Prince was really looking for death.

A piercing gaze on his back made Qi Lianshuo’s body stiffen. Noticing the cold and questioning eyes of the Officials behind him, and looking at the cold smile on Qi Xutian’s face in front of him, Qi Lianshuo’s eyes widened in disbelief and fear, and his body could not help but shudder.

Father Emperor knew? He knew the identity of Mother Consort? Where it not for finding some traces in his Mother Consort’s belongings, even he would not have known that he also carried the Imperial bloodline of An Yang. Thinking no one knew about it, he thought that he could rise to the position of Crown Prince, but now, all of that had come to naught.

Qi Xutian lifted Qi Lianshuo’s limp body, revealing a mocking and scornful sneer as he tossed him down, causing the other to roll and land in the middle of the main hall, where Qi Lianshuo collapsed on the ground with an ashen face. Liu Yi walked down from the side, took out a booklet from his bosom, threw it in front of him and said to the civil and military Officials who had not yet come to their senses, “Here are the details of Concubine Xiao’s contact with An Yang’s secret envoy. Please have a look, Your Excellencies.”

The Officials nodded in a daze, but no one would be foolish enough to go and check. Since His Majesty already had evidence and proof, who would still be meddlesome and question His Majesty’s words? Everyone acted as if nothing had happened, and not looking at Qi Lianshuo anymore, they repeatedly congratulated the Emperor on the throne. The candidate for Crown Prince had already been decided. Cang He now had such an excellent Crown Prince, so how could they not celebrate?

Qi Xutian did not pay attention to the reaction below. He was a little worried since he knew his Ming’er’s body was not well. Now that he had thrown Qi Lianshuo down, he stood up and took Qi Mingyue, who was standing next to the throne, in his arms and let him sit in his embrace, as he had always done. “Ming’er, don’t be angry, your Father Emperor has already dealt with the person who was in the way. If you are still unwell, why don’t you go back to the bedchamber and rest for a while?”

Hearing the whisper in his ear, Qi Mingyue’s expression eased a little and he cast a glance, but when he saw the slightly astonished faces of the Officials, he suddenly remembered that he was at the age when he was about to be crowned 2 , so it no longer seemed appropriate to be treated like that by his Imperial father. He withdrew his gaze, but did not get up. The embrace of his Imperial father was, of course, more comfortable than the Imperial Throne, and what others thought was simply irrelevant to him.

He nodded, perhaps because he had indulged too much yesterday, he was indeed feeling a bit tired at the moment. His body in this life had only just become aware of love affairs and was still not used to it.

Qi Xutian caressed his long hair, took the robe Liu Yi handed him and covered Qi Mingyue up, then stood up with him in his arms, “The Crown Prince has been selected, the coronation ceremony will be held next month to establish the Crown Prince. Announce to the world that the Second Prince, Qi Mingyue, is to be Crown Prince of Cang He!”

Translation Notes
  • 白芙 - Bái Fú - White Lotus - First mentioned in Chapter 4, where it was told that the Empress of Lian Tong gave it as a gift. Bai Fu is one of the best medicines to heal wounds, so it is really precious, but Qi Xutian and Qi Mingyue also use it for other purposes...
  • I think this refers to 冠礼 - Guān Lǐ – Capping Ceremony – A coming of age ceremony marking the transition from childhood to adulthood. It is only after this ceremony that a man is considered an adult and can be given adult responsibilities and rights.
